Breath held, she opened the envelope and quickly read the letter. As though looking at herself from the outside she noted that life implodes, not with a thunder, but with the quiet rustle of paper. And then she heard herself scream.
The prompt: Use the 3rd definition of thunder (bang, rumble) with between 33 and 333 words.
This is my first time with a Trifecta prompt. I tried to go for the 33 word-count end of the spectrum, but went over a bit.
oooooh - a mystery . . . pregnant? unknown child following up after adoption? divorce decree? named in an inheritance? Sooooooooooo many ways to go. :)
ReplyDeleteNice. The rustle of the paper and she screamed... why? Because it was scary? Because it was a pleasant surprise?
ReplyDeleteI am curious... That is the power of writing.
Glad to see you here! Terrific writing - I want to know more.
ReplyDeletePlease!!! A good scream! I would lie to know.
ReplyDeleteI love that the quiet paper has more impact than thunder. Can't wait to read more.
ReplyDeleteGreat impact in so few words! I'd love to know what it's about, but I think it's just as powerful without.
ReplyDeleteI am curious to know the content of the letter. Good work.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite a challenge, and I must say you knocked it out of the park. I read it a few times thinking about the impact. Excellent job! And, thank you for your comment. Much appreciated, friend :)
ReplyDeleteTracie! That was VERY compelling. I am impressed.
ReplyDeleteSorry it took me so long to get here. Stolen moments. Usually quite late at night, you know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely stunningly beautiful.
And it is so true. Life implodes so quietly most of the time. Just stopping right now, in the middle of the night in my now quiet house makes me get butterflies thinking about that truth.
I would love to read more. It does seem like many life-changing events happen quietly.
ReplyDeleteWell done Tracie. You covered a lot in so few words. Blessings my dear.
ReplyDelete"... life implodes, not with a thunder, but with the quiet rustle of paper." That is a brilliant concept.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great write. I have to agree with trudgingthroughfog... the line: "... life implodes, not with a thunder, but with the quiet rustle of paper." is a powerful cluster of words!
ReplyDeleteI want to know what the paper says!!! I was thinking a college denial letter at first, but you left it wide open, it could be anything!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! A letter brings so much with it; we have all had that moment with one. The anticipation of its arrival vs. the unexpected one. You really brought me back to those moments. Great job!
ReplyDeleteOh, you've left us all wanting more. Thanks so much for joining up and welcome to the challenge. This is beautiful and you say so much in very few words. Look forward to more...
ReplyDeleteVery mysterious, this almost feels like a blurb, a mere taster of something bigger to come, very gripping. :)
