I Was Not Switched At Birth

We don't get the ABCFamily channel, so I wasn't aware this Switched At Birth show existed until I saw a commercial for it last week. The use of sign language in the commercial intrigued me enough to look it up on Hulu Friday night. The fact that there was a former Gilmore Girls actress (Vanessa Marano) in it kept me around for a whole episode.

Sidenote: Vanessa was April Nardini on Gilmore Girls. There was this one time I wrote about how distracting I found it that her mom (on the show, not in real life) played Jess' dad's girlfriend in an earlier episode before she was April's mom, prompting a story line (that existed only in my mind) about April hiding in a freezer. But mostly I was forced to hate her character because she was a major catalyst for the Luke/Lorelai breakup, for which she can never be forgiven (clearly I am still a little too emotionally attached to this show).

But back to Switched At Birth. By the end of the first episode I was hooked, and watched three more.

Saturday morning I started it all over, so Katarina could watch it with me from the beginning. That is how we ended up spending the whole day curled up in bed with the laptop - prompting this facebook status update that went up after I tucked her in around eleven o'clock:

Switched At Birth Facebook Status Update

And by around eleven o'clock, I totally mean 11:45PM. Because I am rocking this whole motherhood thing.

This has been my five minute, early Sunday morning, stream of consciousness writing. I now need to rest, because there are still nine episodes of Switched At Birth waiting for me to watch them. (I might need an intervention.)

What did you do this weekend? (and please tell me it involved letting your kids stay up way too late. Because I couldn't have been the only parent who did that, right?)

  1. I am not familiar with "SWITHCHED AT BIRTH"...it sounds like it can be quite addicting....lol!
I watched two WONDERFUL Films today....
"FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN" and "SARAH'S KEY". Both are worth renting...Both are very moving for very different reasons...And that was really MOST of my day...!

    1. I'm adding both of them to my to be watched list. I remember hearing good things about Fireflies in the Garden, but Sarah's Key is new to me.

      Movie days are good things.

  2. I liked 'Gilmore Girls,' but I didn't love it. I never finished watching the entire series, though I get the gist of how it ends. The writing was amazing - what's on TV these days that has dialogue that clever? Anything?

'Switched at Birth' is a new one to me. My current TV obsession (not counting my ongoing 'Simpsons' love affair) is 'Person of Interest.' It has even pulled me back into fan fiction, which I have not indulged in since, y'know, before I was an actual professional writer.

    1. I haven't seen a show with that kind of clever dialogue in a long time!

Person of Interest - I have caught a few episodes of it, and liked it.

  3. I haven't seen the show, but it sounds like so many reality tv shows that I watch and get hooked on.

They do those marathons for just that reason. I think it is there way of trying to stagnate society while all are stuck at home waiting until the last episode of the marathon before they do anything productive.

    1. Once you start a television show marathon - you can't stop until it ends. I think it is some sort of law, like gravity.

  4. Oh. So that's where you were. I was on Twitter trying to see if you were around. i wasn't on Twitter the whole day but I was in and out responding to peeps. So Switched at birth is a good show? There are WAY too many shows out there and not enough time to watch them all.

I went grocery shopping. Got some cleaning wipes. Returned some books at library and got some more. Then watched Steel Magnolias and Kate and Leopold. Until I fell asleep. Kids went to bed around 10ish I believe.
    That was my weekend.
    Love ya Tracie!!!
And AHEM, get on Twitter! :) lol.

  5. Hi! popping in from SOCS. My daughter and I do this all the time. I love that we share shows together! I was late to the GG party, but I was hooked after one episode. I watched the entire series in about six months. :)

    1. I have never watched Glee.

I know I'm the only person in America who hasn't.

  7. Gilmore Girls! I need to add that to my Netflix line up! I watched all of them in the beginning but it sadly got sporatic.

    1. Add it now!! Everyone needs to check out of life for a week and have a nice, long Gilmore Girls marathon watching party. With pie.

  8. That has always bothered me on GG, too. They just should have given her the same name! I mean really, it could have made sense. Anyway, I have gotten my husband addicted to GG, and we have been watching the whole series. He is about to be crushed by the Luke/Lorelai breakup. We may need cookie dough.

  10. I have never heard of this show and now I'm very intrigued. If I'm not back in a few days, you will know that Netflix has consumed me.

Also- Gilmore girls was the best. I can't help but see Lorali in her character on Parenthood.

    1. Make sure to stock up on lots of junk food before you get sucked in! (and let me know what you think about it)

I see Lorelei in her Parenthood character, too. That is also a great show.

  11. GG was all about fast paced dialogue that seemed cool but sometimes went over my head therefore I don't like it. Never saw Switched but will cop to America's Next Top Model reruns that last for hours and my kid and I vegging out watching them, as if there were new, and discussing the eps.

    1. I have gotten sucked into those America's Next Top Model marathons more than once. Those crazy photo shoots are addictive, and I always love the episode where all the models get the makeover.

  12. I adore GG and was not happy the breakup either. I wished that show would have gone on and on!

  13. Love, love, LOVE Switched At Birth!! I am addicted to several of the shows on ABC Family and that is one of them. I can't wait for it to start back up again in the summer.

I've been known to do marathons like that too. When my husband and I got into Dexter (a bit different from Switched At Birth huh? ;)) we would watch the Netflix DVDs for hours and hours. We would literally start watching at like, 10 or 11 in the morning and not stop until it was dark out. It was pretty crazy.

    Stopping by from SOCS!

  16. Now that's what I call getting hooked! I haven't done a marathon in so long, it might have been the Sopranos, and I still haven't seen the final season *g*

    1. I have never seen the Sopranos. I think I need to put it on my list of shows to watch (without Katarina!).

  17. Hmmmmm ... I'll have to look for Switched at Birth on my computer. Sometimes we don't get American stuff in Canada, sometimes we do.

I save all of my television watching for after my kids have gone to bed and I have something else I need to do, like clean the kitchen or whatever. Then I wind up watching the series (doesn't even matter if it sucks ... it just can't feature violence, especially against women, as entertainment because I've totally lost any ability to watch it without being nauseous. IDK what happened, either, but Dexter, CSI, L&O SVU, I love the actors, always loved the premise that I was watching a team conquer evil, but somehow it has all diminished for me since having kids. I just can't find entertainment in it.)

So I'll have to go find this one.

And because Sopranos was shown before I lost my taste for violence, I don't know how I would feel about it now but I have a feeling it would still be a series that I would (for the most part) want to watch. Something about the "truthiness" of it ...

  18. Sweetheart, I can share stories about kids staying up way too late on school nights like ALL the time so NO judgment from me!

I love that you spent the whole day curled up with your sweet K!

  19. Oh Tracie ... THESE are the moments that she will remember and cherish! I had just written in a blog post that I was headed to Google Reader to start reading blogs tonight when Josiah came in, threw himself on the futon in my office, and plaintively asked if I wanted to watch a movie. The little demon in my head insisted on asking how many other things were on my to-do list that would be put off by my acceding to such a request. Thankfully I battled those voices and reminded my heart that these days are numbered! And it was a good movie too! Life lessons or something like that with Ryan Reynolds. Tear jerker though ... beware!

  20. Since I've been packing for the move, I've basically been letting the Wii babysit my son. People keep saying, "it's not going to kill him" but I hope I'm not letting him fry his brain.
